Our virtue of the month is Citizenship:

Letter from The Headmaster:

Dear Spartan Families,

Last week we were excited and proud to host so many of you on campus to observe and sit in your scholar's classrooms. An open house is a unique opportunity for parents to get a meaningful glimpse into the classroom and experience what occurs daily at school. This is something that we will continue to do around February of each school year.

We are so appreciative to all who could take advantage of this opportunity. Not only is this a unique experience for you as a parent, but your presence on campus supporting your scholar and their education is so important. We hope that this was an enjoyable time for all and hope to see those of you that missed it this year in the future.

Looking ahead, we have many exciting events on campus to look forward to. This spring, students will focus on the virtue of friendship on Great Hearts Day; we will gather together at our Spartan Fiesta and Car Show, will welcome new families at new family orientation, and celebrate our kindergartners and fifth graders at their promotion ceremonies, and students will participate in the last of their curricular celebrations for the year.

The week ahead:

SPALDING: Scholars will review the phonograms learned in the weeks prior:  a-z, sh, ee, th, ow, ou, oo, ch, ar, ay, oy, ai, oi, er ,ir, ur, wor, ear, ng, ea, ar, aw, au, or, ck, wh, ed, ew, ui, oa, gu, ph, ough, oe, ey, igh, kn, gn, wr, ie, dge, ei, eigh, ti, si, ci. We are now finished learning all 70 phonograms for Kindergarten level, and review continues. Scholars will be assessed in written form of 10 phonograms on Friday. Please review their pre-assessment on Wednesday to assess where your scholar needs extra support. Scholars will learn and review 10 words a week and be assessed on them on Friday. The words for this week are: live (adj.) live (v.) hill, late, let, big, bag, beg, bog, bug. Scholars will continue to bring home their book bag.  It is important that they read it daily to an adult. Scholars are being graded on homework with a focus on correct completion, penmanship, and overall neatness.

Math: In the past few weeks, we have been studying addition and how to add to the sum of 5.  This week, we will focus on adding to the sum of 10. We will continue to learn how to comprehend and read addition problems and the scholars will begin to learn how to tell their own addition stories. This week the scholar will get the chance to work in pairs, build off of each-others ideas and challenge their peers.

Science/History: In History, our scholars will finish up our president’s unit with a lesson on the lives of the first ladies and how their roles have evolved over time. Scholars will have a review and democracy test on Wednesday. On Friday, scholars will be introduced to a new unit on Symbols and Figures and will specifically learn about the American Flag, its meaning and purpose.

This week in Science, our scholars will continue our Objects in the Sky unit. We will learn about the moon, its features and importance. We will also learn about stars, the constellations and all 8 planets in our solar system.

Literature: The Town Mouse and the Country Mouse is a wonderful story that teaches us not only the importance of being content with what you have, but also how to be grateful for what you have been given.  The scholars will continue to work on comparing two characters through a venn diagram and discovering the moral of the story through guidance and discussion. This is such a cherished piece of literature and a fantastic story to learn from.
