Quarterly Poem: "Mary Had a little Lamb" Traditional Nursery Rhyme

Mary had a little lamb, whose fleece was white as snow. And everywhere that Mary went, the lamb was sure to go.

He followed her to school one day, which was against the rules. It made the children laugh and play, to see a lamb at school.

And so the teacher turned it out, but still it lingered near, he waited patiently about, till Mary did appear.

"why does the lamb love Mary so?" The eager children cried. " Why, Mary loves the lamb, you know," The teacher did reply.

Weekly Poem: " Diddle, Diddle, Dumpling" Traditional Nursery Rhyme

The week ahead:

SPALDING:   Scholars will review the phonograms learned in the weeks prior:  a-z, sh, ee, th, ow, ou, oo, ch.  Scholars will practice writing their phonograms and review top line, mid-point, and baseline using Spalding paper. This week will continue our written phonograms, where scholars will write down the phonogram they hear. Scholars will be assessed in written form on ou, ch, th, ow, sh, ee, oo, oy, and 2 other phonograms on Friday.  Please review their pre-assessment on Wednesday to assess where your scholar needs extra support. In grammar, scholars will  learn about different types of sentences, continuing with the declarative sentences.  In lyceum, scholars continue to meet the teacher in groups.  Scholars who are not with the teacher focus on skills like beginning middle and end sound, rhyming, and letter matching.

Math: : We are still in the midst of studying shapes and as we continue to prepare for our Kindergarten Shapes Extravaganza .  Last week we focused on solid shapes and how some can stack and some can roll.  This week the scholars will take a closer look at flat shapes. We will learn about how many sides and corners the various shapes have, and how you can combine some shapes to make other shapes.  The scholar’s will show mastery of this subject by making a picture out of multiple shapes.

Science/History: : This week, scholars will wrap up the Native American unit with a review and assessment. In celebration and in honor of our Native Americans, we will create a cardboard canoe craft. In Science this week, we will continue the animal unit by introducing and learning about scientist Jane Goodall. We will also explore additional animal terms such as diurnal versus nocturnal, predator versus prey and many more!

Literature: The story of the ugly duckling was one that gave us hope and inspiration.  The next fairy tale that we are reading will show us the true beauty of being kind and gentle to all.   The story of Cinderella is a fairy tale that show a life of hardship, but how true kindheartedness can triumph in the end.
