Quarterly Poem: "Mary Had a little Lamb" Traditional Nursery Rhyme

Mary had a little lamb, whose fleece was white as snow. And everywhere that Mary went, the lamb was sure to go.

He followed her to school one day, which was against the rules. It made the children laugh and play, to see a lamb at school.

And so the teacher turned it out, but still it lingered near, he waited patiently about, till Mary did appear.

"why does the lamb love Mary so?" The eager children cried. " Why, Mary loves the lamb, you know," The teacher did reply.

Weekly Poem: " Little Bo Peep"

The week ahead:

SPALDING:  Scholars will review the phonograms learned in the weeks prior:  a-z, sh, ee, th and learn the new phonograms ow, ou, oo and ch. We start spelling words in our daily Spalding homework this week. Scholars will practice writing their phonograms and review top line, mid-point, and baseline using Spalding paper. This week will continue our written phonograms, where scholars will write down the phonogram they hear. Scholars will be assessed in written form on ow oo, ou, and 7 other phonograms on Friday.  Please review their pre-assessment on Wednesday to assess where your scholar needs extra support.  In grammar, scholars will begin to learn about different types of sentences starting with the declarative sentence.  In lyceum, scholars continue to meet the teacher in groups.  Scholars who are not with the teacher focus on skills like beginning middle and end sound, rhyming, and letter matching.

Math: : Last week we got the wonderful opportunity to focus on various solid (3D) shapes.  This week we will study a few flat (2D) shapes.  We will learn about circles, squares, triangles, rectangles, and hexagons.  The scholars will have the opportunity to explore each shapes by discussing their attributes, such as: sides, corners, edges, etc.  We will provide the children many hands on opportunities to be able to memorize each shape and its qualities.

Science/History: : In History, our scholars will review the final two regions of our Native American unit which are: Eastern Woodlands and the Southeast region. Scholars will have an opportunity to test on the unit the following week. In Science this week, we will learn about living and non-living things.

Literature: As we enter the begin of Quarter 2, we will move from Folk Tales to Fairy Tales.  The scholars will grow to experience that a Fairy Tale is a children’s story about magical lands and beings.  The story of The Ugly Duckling is one where we will learn more about character traits, and what events shape a character.
